What is Cisco ACI?

It is the industry-leading software-defined network solution with a well-defined architecture, centralized automation, and a policy-driven application profile. It uses a centralized controller called the Application Policy Infrastructure Controller or APIC, the controller which simply creates application policies for the entire data center infrastructure.

What are the three main components of ACI architecture?

The three components of ACI are as follows: 

  • ANP: ANP or Application Network Profile is a collection of in-point group connections and the policies that define those connections.
  • APIC: APIC, our application policy infrastructure controller, is a centralized software controller that managers downstream switches and actress management plane.
  • ACI fabric: Eat and maintain the connection of spine and leaf switches. Spine and leaf in the ACI world are the Cisco Nexus 9000 series switches(N9K). The spine and leaf act as a control, and the data plane of the ACI, which is the running retains a version of NX-OS in ACI mode.

  • Logical model: this model is the interface for the system, and administrators interact with the analytical model through API, CLI, or GUI. A logical model is a policy layer that includes point configuration on the controller. 
  • Resolved model: this model is the Abstract model expression that the APIC resolves from the logical model. It is an essential element and configuration component that would be delivered to the physical infrastructure when one must execute the policy, which means when an endpoint connects to a leaf.
  • Concrete model: this model is the actual instead configuration delivered to each fabric member based on the resulting model and the endpoints attached to the fabric. The concrete model includes the basic configuration of the device, and besides fabric, that means spines and leaves. 

What is mean by context/VRF on ACI?

VRF or context is the top-level network construct within the ACI tenant. It is also known as a tenant Network and is available as a private network in the ACI GUI. The main features of VRF are below: 

  • VRF or context defines layer 3 address domain.
  • Single or mode Bridge domain can be associated with VRF.
  • All of the endpoints within the VRF must have unique IP addresses. If the policy allows, it can forward packets directly between these devices.

What are the main components that make up an ACI architecture?

The main components that comprise the ACI architecture are Spine, Leaf, and APIC. 

What model of switches have we used to deploy ACI architecture?

Nexus 9300 and Nexus 9500 are there to deploy ACI architecture. 

How does ACI fabric maintain a connection to the outside world?

Employing traditional routing protocols like BGP or OSPF, ACI fabric, and pear with the outside world. Anyone can use static routes as per their choice. It is done by leaf note, not by the spine, which may be counterintuitive if you think of a spine switch, like a core switch. So, when the leaf note peers without the side world, the leaf sends what it has learned to the spine, and the spine functionally becomes a route- reflector.
